Sleeping rough

Many travellers have been caught up in delays at airports for whatever reason - technical problems with the plane, cancellations, strikes, bad weather, volcanic  eruptions etc.

This  was at Christchurch Airport in New Zealand. All of us will have 'dropped off' on some occasion, sometimes to the amusement of others, but some have to grab sleep whenever they can; others have nowhere else to go. In western countries, homelessness is usually not obvious to middle class eyes, being concentrated in poorer areas parts of urban areas, but in other countries it is more obvious. Here are some examples:

Those, for whom train travel is as exotic as it gets, waiting at Dhanbad (Jharkand) railway station to go back to their villages.

Sleeping passengers, on top of a bus travelling towards Dhanbad, caught up in a demonstration at Panagarh.

Outside Dhanbad station - can't sleep here!

About 5 years ago,  after arriving late at night, we were offered this room at the Samrat Hotel in New Delhi for $200 pn. Needless to say we asked for another room. Perhaps should have stayed here instead, except this is in Varanasi
